In this case study, we'll break down how we ranked a B2B AI SAAS business in the top three for several lead generation terms, generating tens of leads (worth tens of thousands of dollars) per month in a highly competitive niche.
About The Client
This client operates an AI-powered software that helps businesses connect with customers and ultimately land sales.
They generate leads through many avenues like cold calling and paid ads, and have had lots of success with SEO as well.
When we looked at their organic performance, we noticed they were ranking just outside the top three for many lead generation terms that are important for the business.
We decided to craft a strategy to target these keywords, given how close they were to gaining more traffic and, ultimately, leads for the business.
The Target Keywords
The target keywords were all related to one of the main service pages of the website, which highlighted one of the uses of the software for a niche application in customer service.
Combined, the search volume estimate for the page was thousands of monthly traffic, according to Ahrefs, with just over 8k impressions per month for the page on Google search console.
Our Link Building Strategy
Luckily for us, the target pages were already well-optimized from an SEO point of view, with great structure, content, and keyword targeting.
This meant we only felt it necessary to build links to these pages rather than re-write them or do any other fancy SEO changes to make it look like we were doing more work than what was actually needed for results.
What Type Of Links Did We Build?
For pretty much every campaign we work on where link building is necessary, we like to use high-quality guest posts and link insertions.
You can learn all about what 'high-quality' means in our guide on the topic, as this definition changes from SEO to SEO.
A quick TL.RD is that we look for niche-relevant websites with high-quality traffic from relevant countries and websites that are not openly selling links - this means using a blacklist on the anchor text as well.
Anchor Text Considerations
When building these links to the target pages, we had to be careful with anchor text to not overoptimize and put the page at risk of a penalty.
We prefer to use most links to any target page as non-exact match, with the 'best' links exact match where possible. This obviously varies depending on the target page and how many existing links it has, as well as the competition, and we adjust the strategy here as we see fit.
How Many Links Did We Build?
For this project, we only needed to build 2-3 links per month to see results.
This was because of a few factors:
- The website was already established, and the target page was already ranking on page 1 for many terms.
- The website had enough authority to allow us to target the inner page with more links than we normally would.
We continued this for a few months and managed to give the page the boost it needed to rank more highly for its lead generation terms, which in turn resulted in more leads for the business.
The Results
We were able to secure the following results for our client:
- Ranked in the top three for 6 key lead generation terms.
- Increased traffic to the page by 50% in three months.
- Generated an extra 10+ leads per month for the business, leading to thousands of annual recurring revenue in deals.
